School daze

I rode the school bus to kindergarten. The nearest elementary school was within walking distance, but it was across a busy highway, so all us wee gaffers were driven to school. It was good training for my first two years of full-time elementary school, when I rode about half an hour each way to school. I don't think the bus did me any permanent harm.

I've got some peculiar ideas about education, and I don't recommend most of 'em for public consumption. All the same, I think kindergarten is probably not too critical for later academic excellence. I'd be much more concerned with social integration, and with the relationship the teacher has with the kids. Neither one of those is going to show up on the reports.

As a parent, I would say go for the school that you think will give weeMiche the best education that you can offer. You may be able to work around the transportation issue.

I don't know about in your area, but here, we have companies that will, for a fee, transport the students to and from school -- you may want to look into those.....

Tuxedo: Thanks for the reassuring words about taking the bus to school from such an early age. I know lots of kids do it and turn out fantastic. I suppose it boils down to the fact that I didn't start taking the bus until grade 3 -- so that's where my mental comfort zone is sitting!

I concur on the social integration opinion. Time to hang-out by the schools and see what we're up against.

KLee: I really appreciate your input as a professional and as a mom! I hadn't thought about hiring a transportation service... very interesting!

In the end, I think it's all a crap-shoot anyway. Great school with a lousy teacher is possible. Lousy school with a great teacher is also possible! I can only hope that weeMiche has teachers as wonderful as you, KLee!
