I have no answer to your cosmic questions, nor do I really get people who brag about their expensive lifestyles. (In prep school they had a phrase to describe such people, and it was not a complimentary one.)

But have you read The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio? I love that book!

Everything I can think of to say sounds uncharitable and mean, since I like to think that even if I had that kind of money I'd find something better to spend it on than extra-pricey blue jeans.

So instead I'll just sit here and blink stupidly.

And I don't know any SAHPs who are rolling in dough, so I can't help you with that one, either.

PS: I haven't read that book, but I'll have to go look for it at the library. Thanks for the tip!

BB: You're welcome to sit on our sofa and blink anytime you want! Let me got a pot of coffee on ....

Ah!
All I have to defemd myself is this: I've worked veru hard for my money...though people dont like to believe that and thing that the fiacne pays for everything, which is not the case at all.

Well others after university or college travelled Europe for summers, I worked, sometimes ten hours a day.

I made good money with my books and freelamcing and having a job... But trust me, it is a lot of work. So much sometimes that I freak out.

So yes, I work hard. I need a nanny becuase I need to work to pay for nanny. It's a vicious circle.

As well, I like to enjoy life. I work very hard to make money so I can have fun sometimes - vacations...

Everyone assumes I was very lucky to get so many jobs...but I did have to work very hard. All through my twenties I was working six days a week.

It's money I worked hard for, so, yes, I like to treat myself. I can send you to very cheap manicure places if you want - those littel things really do make you feel better. It's good to be pampered sometimes.

And I am most definitely not rolling in dough, although that would be nice.

Love your blog.

Hi Rebecca! (or should I be referring to you as npd?)

I assumed you work hard for your money. I can't imagine the pressures of writing for a national newspaper or going through the iterations of creating a book. I don't begrudge you your "fun" or your "pampering" or your "treats." My intent of the post wasn't a lynchin' -- honest!

If you're not rolling in dough, I just don't get why some folks think that I must be!

Well well well, look at the attention you're getting now!

I have to say as part of a two-income-family, we don't have a hell of a lot of spare cash to throw around either, so I would never imagine that a one-income family would have it. On one hand, it does make me a little crazy when I hear friends of mine with an SUV each and kids in tony programs and a big house in the suburbs complaining that they don't have any money. On the other hand, I'm a big believer in retail therapy on a moderate scale - I like to treat myself every now and then. It's all about choice, I guess, and what you choose to do with your money.

Very interesting discussion!

Wow! Two Big Media Personalities commenting on the same post! Very exciting!

Good point Dani. It is all about personal choice. What works for someone else won't necessarily work for me. Good to remember!
